Building a Better McDonough, One House at a Time!

There are people in your own backyard without adequate housing.
You don't have to travel far to make a positive difference in someone's life...

The Atlanta Fuller Center: Project McDonough began in 2009 with one goal in mind: to promote collaborative and innovative partnerships with individuals and organizations in an unrelenting quest to provide adequate housing for people in need.

Founded by concerned McDonough citizens Mark Galey and Shane Persaud with the help of dozens of volunteers, the program has repaired and remodeled over 16 homes for deserving McDonough families.  Recognizing a greater need, Persaud now plans to extend the reach of the project beyond McDonough by establishing a Henry County Covenant Partnership with the Fuller Center.  Once finalized, Henry County will join the league of 54 other covenant partners in 26 U.S. states, along with 15 international covenant partners.

The Fuller Center is a faith-based, nonprofit organization created in 2005 by the late Millard Fuller, founder of Habitat for Humanity.  The mission is to provide opportunities for the elderly, poor, or disadvantaged in local communities to have a simple, decent place to live.  In the United States alone, almost two million people live with a hole in their roof, 3.7 million live with broken windows and 2.5 million live in a house where the foundation is crumbling beneath them. Just over one million people live without complete plumbing facilities.  For example, Project McDonough's first candidate, Mrs. Lillie Miller, had been living for years in her home with issues including termite infestation in her flooring, extensive damage to her roof, and without hot water to bathe or cook.

The Fuller Center seeks to improve living conditions by helping those people help themselves.  By working alongside volunteers and repaying construction costs on terms they can handle, homeowners like Mrs. Miller are able to regain a sense of basic human dignity.  If you found yourself in a similar, unfortunate situation, wouldn't you want someone to offer you a helping hand?

There is a considerable amount of work to be done, and your time, energy, skills, and financial contributions are needed.
In-
kind donations of building materials and supplies are appreciated!  Volunteers are always welcome!  Please visit the Project McDonough Facebook page for the most up-to-date work schedule.

PROJECT MCDONOUGH LAUNCHES MOST AMBITIOUS PROJECT YET!
JOIN US TO HELP THE DELEE FAMILY FEBRUARY 13 - JULY 31, 2010

Project McDonough continues in 2010 with plans to assist another deserving family in need, the DeLee family.  Ed DeLee, a construction worker and Governor of the local Moose Lodge, was involved in a motorcycle accident last August.  His family's life changed forever.  Now confined to a wheelchair, DeLee is unable to work.  He, his wife, and their two children were forced to move from their home.  Fortunately, close friends Bruce Westcott and Annette O'Banion approached The Atlanta Fuller Center with a request: a new home for this family.

"For Ed DeLee it has always been about God, family, and his work.  The challenges this family has had to overcome are a testament to his love for them.  This is the second time he has learned to walk again...he has a unique ability to overcome challenges that most people could or would not.  He takes them on and moves forward," says O'Banion.

McDonough resident Monta Brown will be donating a neglected home on Legion Road that has been in his family.  Gutted by fire and abandoned for years, the small home will be completely transformed to meet the needs of the DeLee family.  Over the next six months, Fuller Center volunteers will add extra rooms, a second-story floor, and incorporate wheelchair accessible designs.  The cost of this ambitious project will exceed $55,000 and will include hundeds of skilled labor and volunteer hours.

Help make this house a home for the DeLee family by volunteering, sponsoring, donating money, or contributing supplies and materials.
