The Atlanta Fuller Center: Project McDonough

There are people in your own backyard without adequate housing.
You don't have to travel far to make a positive difference in someone's life...

Do you know Mrs. Lillie Miller?  If you have lived in McDonough, GA for any length of time, you probably recognize this widowed, 70-year-old resident.  She has called her bungalow on Old Griffin Street home for the last 54 years.  However, she has been unable, both physically and financially, to adequately maintain her residence.  And her enormous pride has prevented her from asking for help.  Luckily, The Atlanta Fuller Center for Housing doesn't have to be asked to recognize need in our community.

The Fuller Center is a faith-based, nonprofit organization created in 2005 by the late Millard Fuller, founder of Habitat for Humanity.  The mission is to provide opportunities for the elderly or poor in local communities to have a simple, decent place to live.  In the United States alone, almost two million people live with a hole in their roof, 3.7 million live with broken windows and 2.5 million live in a house where the foundation is crumbling beneath them. Just over one million people live without complete plumbing facilities.  For example, Mrs. Miller has been battling termite infestation in her flooring, extensive damage to her roof, and living without hot water to bathe or cook.

Unfortunately, there are many more "Mrs. Millers" in Henry County.  Some may need major attention like a new roof or new floors, while others may need relatively minor cosmetic details like paint or a new door.   Many of these people are too elderly or too poor to help themselves through traditional means, but this does not make them any less deserving of help.  The Fuller Center seeks to improve their standards of living by helping those people help themselves.  By working alongside volunteers and repaying construction costs on terms they can handle, homeowners like Mrs. Miller are able to regain a sense of basic human dignity.  If you found yourself in a similar, unfortunate situation, wouldn't you want someone to offer you a helping hand?

The dedicated group of volunteers behind Project McDonough have their sights set on many more homes in the area, and it is estimated to cost in excess of $50,000 to complete the entire scope of the project.  We have partnered with Wesley Way United Methodist Church in McDonough and the River of Life group to do Greater Blessing Box repairs on these homes. On June 25th thru June 27th over 120 high school and college students from various churches around Georgia and Alabama will helped with several of these projects. The repairs included interior/exterior painting, bathroom repairs, flooring, trash/debris removal, lawn mowing, minor landscaping, drywall repairs, and weather proofing.  There is still a considerable amount of work left to be done, and your time, energy, and financial contributions are needed.

Your financial donation is desperately needed in order to turn this mission into a reality.   Every contribution made prior to August 30, 2009 will be matched dollar for dollar - up to $500,000 - as part of the "$1 Million for Millard" campaign!

Your in-kind contributions of building materials and supplies are appreciated!

Volunteers are always welcome!
